This empirical study aims at identifying community-related contextual characteristics which are expected to have influence on mental health of community residents. Paying special attention to neighborhood as a geographical unit of community on the one hand and depression as a major form of mental health symptoms on the other, this study has performed a multi-level analysis. It has primarily focused on neighborhood poverty, perceived neighborhood disorder, and social network in neighborhood. Data were collected from 794 adults living in 16 neighborhoods in Daejeon, and a statistical analysis was carried out by applying a hierarchical linear model. The results of this study show the significant effect of neighborhood poverty, neighborhood disorder, and informal social network on depression of the respondents.
